Research Summary

This article presents a normative research that employs literature review as the methodology to analyze the impact of climate change phenomena on the regulation of international maritime law and the 1982 Law of the Sea Convention, as well as the effects of climate change on Indonesia’s maritime territory. The study conducts a literature review using sources such as UNCLOS 1982, UNFCCC 1992, Kyoto Protocol 1997, and the Paris Agreement on climate change. Climate change is a significant global challenge, and the maritime sector is directly affected. The 1982 Law of the Sea Convention, which serves as the primary legal framework for regulating international maritime territories, needs to be analyzed in the context of climate change to ensure the sustainability and protection of marine ecosystems. Additionally, Indonesia, as an archipelagic country, has extensive maritime territories that are vulnerable to the impacts of climate change.

Based on the literature analysis, it is found that climate change has a significant impact on the regulation of international maritime law and the 1982 Law of the Sea Convention. Addressing climate change within the context of international maritime law requires international cooperation and the strong implementation of global agreements such as UNFCCC and the Kyoto Protocol. On the other hand, the impact of climate change on Indonesia’s maritime territory includes increasing sea surface temperature, rising sea levels, and changes in marine ecosystems, which can affect the sustainability of marine resources and the livelihoods of coastal communities.

To tackle these challenges, concrete steps are needed to integrate climate change perspectives into international maritime law regulation. Enhancing understanding and awareness of climate change and the need for marine environmental protection should be the primary focus in shaping national and regional policies. Additionally, international collaboration and the implementation of international legal frameworks like the Paris Agreement in Indonesia should be strengthened to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and mitigate the impact of climate change.
